November 16, 2017 – Las Vegas, NV – In the competitive power and speed $15,000 FEI South Point Jumper Stake, presented by Secchiari, it was the nineteenth pair to go who sped into the lead for the win. Going double clean, with a time of 22.15 seconds in the speed phase, Kaitlin Campbell and her tried-and-true equine partner Rocky W ultimately topped the field of 27 competitors.

In a full gallop throughout, Campbell rode a tidy track, especially during the immediate speed phase where the young professional knew she could turn it up a notch. When she spoke of the course, designed by Oscar Soberon, the winner said, “The time allowed in the first phase was not too tight, so I was able to ride normally. Although Rocky is 19 years old now, he still spooks at the liverpools, so I had to ride him a bit more through that part. I had seen people do the last line in six stride, but I ran down there hoping he’d leave in five strides, and he did!”

Campbell and Rocky W are no strangers to the winner’s circle, posting many wins throughout their eleven years of competing together. Though in his upper teens, the horse still loves his job. “I pick and choose my classes with him, I take care of him every day, and I cut out the schooling classes. Although he’s toward the end of his career, he loves showing and he loves winning, so he’ll tell me what he wants to do.”

Moving to the West Coast just last year, Campbell has been looking forward to showing at the Las Vegas National. “I’ve always shown at indoors on the East Coast, and there aren’t any shows like that here on the West Coast, so Las Vegas is the closest thing I’ve been able to get since moving out here. The arena rides very nicely and is definitely larger than most of the indoors on the East Coast.”

Vanderveen Verifies a Victory in the $50,000 FEI 1.50m Las Vegas National Welcome Speed Classic, Presented by Walter Oil & Gas Corporation

November 16, 2017 – Las Vegas, NV – Tonight’s $50,000 FEI 1.50m Las Vegas National Welcome Jumper Speed Classic, presented by Walter Oil & Gas Corporation, was the qualifier for Saturday night’s highlight class, and the competition among the 53 entries was fierce. Galloping in the arena in the twelfth spot, U.S.A.’s Kristen Vanderveen rode a masterfully fast track in 54.77 seconds aboard the 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili, holding the lead for the remaining 41 rides.

Rails and refusals plagued a number of competitors, with the final jump on course, a red plank vertical, often causing a heartbreaking four faults. But Vanderveen put full trust in her partner of three years, knowing that speed classes are one of his strengths. “Having this qualifying class in a speed format definitely worked to my advantage, since we focused on speed classes in Wellington this year.”

She continued, “The secret is to keep him happy. When he’s having fun, he’s super careful – especially in the speed rounds and jump-offs.”

When asked how she mastered the indoor setting over a challenging track, Vanderveen commented, “Riding in the indoor is definitely a big adjustment, but I told myself that it’s not a whole new sport. I should walk the lines and ride like I normally do. So I really tried to stick with my pace from start to finish and be as tidy in my turns as possible.”

A nice way to make her first time showing in Las Vegas memorable, Vanderveen has also had time to enjoy the venue and the city. “This show is very convenient. I’ve never seen anything like it, I didn’t envision it would be like this,” she said. “My dad came to visit [from Chicago], so it’s been nice to spend time with him. There’s a lot to do without having to be stuck at the horse show all day long.”

Ben Maher and Tipsy Du Terral Emerge Victorious in the First FEI Class of the Las Vegas National, CSI4*-W

November 15, 2017 – Las Vegas, NV – In his first appearance at The Las Vegas National, Great Britain’s Olympian Ben Maher took the victory with Poden Farms’ Tipsy Du Terral in the $35,000 FEI 1.45m Blenheim Welcome Jumper Classic, presented by Master Surfaces. Forty-four entries rode Oscar Soberón’s power and speed course. Twenty-fourth to go, Maher’s smooth track and forward pace in a time of 30.29 could not be beat. Holding the lead until Maher galloped in, John Perez and Utopia finished second, stopping the clock in 31.12 seconds.

“The course was tougher than I was expecting,” Maher said. “In the end, there were enough riders that were clean, but fortunately it went my way.”

Of the unique aspect of this city and, in particular, the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center, Maher noted, “This is a great venue. It’s nice to not have to go too far to the show. I can wake up in the morning and come right here. I’ve been to Las Vegas for the World Cup Finals and coming here has the same exciting feeling now as it did then.”

He continued, “I’ll show Tipsy this week and then head back to Europe with some other horses and maybe go to Olympia in London. I was in Doha last week and am here this week, and the standards did not change. There is not a difference in the level of riding from venue to venue.”

Tune in tomorrow for the $15,000 FEI 1.35m South Point Jumper Stake, presented by Secchiari, and the $50,000 FEI Welcome Speed Classic, presented by Walter Oil & Gas Corporation.
